Abstract

Purpose: to establish the vocal range profile of normal male and female Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

Methods: sixty subjects participated in this study, thirty males and thirty females, aged 20 to 40 years, all non-professional voice users, non-smokers and with no history of vocal complaints. To compose the study group, subjects were individually submitted to auditory-perceptual vocal assessment according to the clinical parameters of the RASAT scale and s/z ratio. When data indicated absence of vocal alteration, subjects were submitted to vocal range profile analysis using the clinical voca/gram technique. The counting of semitones considered the chromatic scale.

Results: the vocal range profile of the male sample ranged from 20 to 39 semitones, and the female, from 20 to 37 semitones; the range of the lowest notes produced by the male sample was from C1 to F1; for the female sample, it was from B1 to F2; the range of the highest notes produced by the male sample was from B2 to D#4; for the female sample, it was from E3 to B4.

Conclusions: it was found a minimum vocal range value of 20 semitones, and a maximum of 39 semitones in Brazilian Portuguese speakers who do not use their voice professionally.
