The effect of local mass on process of lip scar in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate surgery

Resumo
Objetivo: verificar o efeito da massagem labial na cicatriz da fissura transforme unilateral.
Métodos: participaram do estudo 10 crianças operadas de fissura transforme unilateral com idade entre um ano e nove meses e quatro anos e sete meses. Aplicou-se um questionário que buscou investigar se a criança recebeu a massagem labial, qual o profissional que orientou, quais tipos de manobras foram realizadas, com que freqüência e durante quanto tempo. Posteriormente essas crianças foram encaminhadas ao cirurgião plástico que avaliou de forma minuciosa a cicatriz.
Resultados: das seis crianças (60%) beneficiadas com a massagem considerada adequada pelo estudo (quanto ao tipo, freqüência e duração), cinco (83,3%) apresentaram cicatriz normal e uma (16,7%) cicatriz alterada.
Conclusão: o estudo indica que a massagem labial apresenta relação direta com o processo de cicatrização em pacientes de fissura transforme unilateral.

Abstract
Purpose: to verify the effects of labium massage in the unilateral cleft lip and palate scar.
Methods: ten children with unilateral cleft lip and palate operated between the ages of 1year and 9 months and 4 years and 7 months participated in this study. This study counted on questionnaire applied by a speech therapist with enclosed questions, that attempted to investigate if the child received labium massage, which professional has oriented, what kinds of maneuvers were performed, with what periodicity and during which period. Afterwards, these children were taken to a plastic surgeon that carefully evaluated the scar.
Results: out of the six (60%) children who were benefited by the massage considered to be appropriate by the study (concerning the type, periodicity and duration), five (83.3%) presented normal scar and where one (16.7%) presented disturbed scar.
Conclusion: in spite of the limited sample, this study indicates that labium massage has a direct proportion to the process of healing for unilateral transforame cleft patients.
