Abstract

Purpose: to approach the problem that involves children with mental deficiency briefly, namely the importance that the communication has for the social competence development and the development of the interpersonal relations with the group of pairs and its subsequent correlation with the adaptation problems.

Methods: bibliographical revision on the thematic in question in the databases LILACS, MEDLINE and SCIELO in the period from 1993 to 2005, being later target of reflection on the part of the authors.

Results: nobody contests that the "difference" of the person with deficiency should be accepted by the society and that this should give to the person with deficiency all the ways so that she overcomes its difficulties. We have to study the difficulties and deficiencies of a child or a young person if we want to learn to help them to take advantage the maximum of its abilities and capacities. The most important characteristics of the children and young persons with deficiency are its aptitudes and residual capacities.

Conclusion: it becomes urgent to develop new intervention strategies that respond adequately to these demands. It is important that such strategies result of a correct diagnosis of needs, so that they are effective in the results that they propose to reach.
